A young woman, age 22, has been suffering with clinical depression. She has an older brother who is exceptionally bright and highly successful. She feels a sense of low self-esteem and constantly compares herself with him. More recently, she has developed suicidal thoughts, and her family and doctor have become seriously concerned that she may want to harm herself. Although she has never stated any intent to harm anyone else, the concern for her personal safety continues to grow. The woman is ignoring her personal health, missing many days at work, and isolating herself from others. After she considers taking an overdose of anti-depressants, she makes the decision to voluntarily enter a psychiatric hospital for treatment. Because family dynamics are important in this case, analyze the role that family therapy can play in this woman’s care.
