In other words, he encourages people to think and reason like philosophers.

Answer: philophy is born out of suspicion regarding our senses. In the myth inhabitants of the cave interpret the world exactly according to the shadow they see on the wall of the cave. These people are not philosophers, they are not enlightened because naively believe in their senses. Philosophy teaches us wisdom and wisdom (according to some philosophers !!!) means following REASON and not SENSES. In this myth the philosopher is the one who leaves the cave (allegory of prison and false security) and views light of day. In  other words philosopher is not a mass man, he follows his reason and not senses, i.e. (in this case he walks off the beaten path).

Explanation: Plato as well as many other philosophers believes in superiority of reason within human psychological equipment. But there are also many philosophers (sometimes called "irrationalists" who view with suspicion reason and do not put it on the pedestal).
