The conditions of the workers in factories were so low that it was like no wage. They could not even sustain a family to feed and survive. But still they continued and worked in factories to make a secure life for themselves. Else they could also be replaced by other workers very easily.
The labor movement did grow to protect the concerns of workers. Labor unions were organised for better wages, reasonable hours and safer working conditions. But it soon failed as a result of maturing of Industrialism. Then national unions created the AFL but they fought only for the skilled labours. So, even with all these conditions, socialism never grew in United States.
