At the end of the Middle Ages, the situation in Europe was changing. In order to prosper and gain more wealth, many European countries started to sponsor expeditions. The goal of the expeditions was to find new routes toward the markets of Asia, so that the trade can go on without being dependent fro  third party. While some of the explorations indeed resulted in finding new routes toward Asia, others came out with very unexpected results.

Some of the expeditions actually resulted in the discovery of new continents. Initially it was North America that was discovered, and soon after that it was South America. After some time, lot of island chains and Australia were discovered. This brought in all sorts of changes int he world, from economic and political, to demographic and social.
