Imagine yourself as the president’s chief of staff. You have been hearing about a recent humanitarian crisis from somewhere in the world, and you feel strongly the United States has a duty to help, not only because human rights are at the base of American society, but also because the United Nations has established that universal human rights must be protected globally.

Research the humanitarian crisis (you may choose any current crisis) and write a five-paragraph persuasive essay styled for the president of the United States. Using the resources provided, you will choose the three executive departments and/or independent agencies that you believe are best suited to aid the United Nations in securing basic human rights around the world, and request that the president ask Congress to increase its funding. Your report should begin with an introduction briefly discussing the humanitarian crisis you have researched and why the United States should provide help as required by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The body of your report should describe the basic duties and functions of each of the departments/agencies you have chosen, and how each department/agency could help serve at least two elements included in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
