The Treaty of Tordesillas was a treaty signed between Portugal and Spain in 1494, with a view to dividing the overseas territories conquered by the two countries during the great navigations. A demarcation line was established that divided the Portuguese lands of the Spanish, including the lands conquered and those that were still to be conquered.

Brazil was discovered in 1500, by Pedro Alvares Cabral. The Treaty of Tordesillas served as the basis for the division of South America, between the Spanish part and the Portuguese part, which became Brazil, the only country with a distinct language in Latin America, the Portuguese.
