Describe how you can separate each enantiomer from a racemic mixture of tartaric acid (structure below). Your answer must show each step in the process and you must explain why your process works (i.e. why separation is possible). You may not use any form of chromatography in your process.

Answer:  One way to separate a racemic mixture is through Crystallization.

Explanation:

A separation of a racemic mixture into their component enantiomers, is well know as  "resolution"

When separating a racemic mixture of tartaric acid, the easiest way to do it, is by crystiallization.

As we can see in the diagram,  we introduce a  pure enantiomer seed that will start the desire conglomerate, and under repetead cycles of cooling and heating, the pure conglomerate crystal will grow,  thereby leaving the other enantiomer in solution.
