1. Could you still use your sewing machine if your feed dogs were not functioning? Why or
why not?
2. Where do you put a threaded bobbin and where does the thread from the bobbin go when
the machine is in use?
3. Why are thread guides important?
4. If you were going to make a curtain for a window that was two and a half feet wide and
three and a half feet high, what size would your piece of fabric need to be? Add a half foot
to both the length and the width to account for seams and give your answer in yards.

6. Think of a new use for one of the man-made fabrics that has been invented in the past 25

7. Choose either the fashion or design industry and explain how you think the baby boomers,
those born right afer World War II, will change the industry as they transition from later-
middle age to senior citizens. Explain the reasons for your answer.
8. Do you think that the explosion of shows about design have helped or hurt those in the
industry?

Answer:

1. For the most part the answer is no. Some types of sewing machine function (darning, quilting, thick fabrics, thread painting-embroidery) need the feed dogs down, but for the most part, sewing a seam requires functioning feed dogs to move the fabric through the machine at the right timing to create a proper lock-stitch.

2.The bobbin goes in the little compartment right under the needle. You secure the bobbin in and then wrap a piece of its thread around the side of the compartment. When you started the machine it automatically comes up and threads through your fabric alongside the main thread.

3.Metal hooks and loops used to guide the upper thread through the machine as the machine is threaded helping the thread to feed smoothly through the machine.

4. Three feet wide, four feet high .  1yard by 1&1/3hard

5. Loads of ‘easy to use’ programmes and ‘How To’ guides make it simple for anyone to put a brochure/newsletter/marketing piece together – how difficult can it be with so much help available? Technology has not only changed the way designs are accomplished, it’s changed the perception of ‘design’ from a hard earned skill to something you can learn in an afternoon off.

6. Take a bunch of shirts with multiple differing designs, tear them into shreds then sew different mismatching peices back together into a new shirt, creating a new style of clothing you could call "jigsawed"

7.The baby boomers could change the fashion industry as they transition to senior citizens because they could motivate designers to create products that meet their needs. For example, they might motivate shoe designers to design shoes that are similar to those worn by the younger generation but perhaps with more comfort and lower heels. Therefore, they will maintain their sense of fashion, but in a rather different manner.

8.Helped; The explosion brought new ideas to the industry and new people as well.
