Tenement buildings were very narrow apartment buildings that were once single-family dwellings. These places were extremely crowded since they housed the thousands of newcomer immigrants that left their countries looking for better opportunities in America. The lack of windows and consequent poor ventilation, together with lack of plumbing, made the people who lived in the interior apartments prone to several illnesses (cholera epidemics, for example). They were also built so close to one another that sunlight could not get in. Government eventually called for action and passed the Tenement House Act of 1867, which set regulations for these places.
