Hindley treated Catherine and Heathcliff terribly after Mr. Earnshaw died. Hindley especially treated Heathcliff worse than Catherine because Heathcliff was the adopted son of Mr. Earnsaw and he was black. He hated that his late father treated Heathcliff like one of his own and so he threw his hate on Catherine and Heathcliff. Heathcliff loved Catherine and vice versa and I think that Hindley knew that which is why he hated on Heathcliff more and more as time went on. He eventually treated Heathcliff like a servant after Catherine went to stay for a period of time with the neighbors. When Catherine came back home and saw how Heathcliff was being treated by Hindley it broke her heart. But Catherine was changed.
