A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965) in 1959, and it is the first play performed in Brodway which was written by an African American woman. Hansberry became inspired by a short poem, Harlem, written by Lanston Hughes (1902-1961) in 1951, and her own experiences of growing up in a segregated Chicago.

The play depicts the struggles of The Youngers, an African American family, and the story is set in a very small apartment - with just one bedroom - in which three generations of Younger must put up with difficulties.

The apartment is located in the slums of Chicago during the 1950s, and it is described as being tiny - too many people in too small a room: in poor conditions, with no light, cramped, overcrowded and worn-out in quality.
