Element is a pure substance that is made up of only one type of atom.

An element cannot be broken down by any chemical means. However, nuclear reactions can lead to the generation of new elements.
Examples of elements include: copper, neon and iron.
Currently, there are 115 known elements in nature.

The substance that is made up of only one type of atom is an ELEMENT.

Further Explanation

Matter can be classified into two major groups: pure substances and mixtures.

Pure substances are substances that have a uniform and definite composition. If one were to take a sample of any pure substance, the particles that make up the substance will all be the same and will have similar properties.

Mixtures are made up of two or more substances that are placed in a similar “container”. Their composition is not uniform so a sample of a mixture may have variable amounts of its components. The substances are only physically combined so they keep their original properties and they may be separated by simple means.

Mixtures may be homogeneous or heterogeneous.

  • Homogeneous mixtures or solutions are mixtures wherein the components are evenly mixed and distributed so that it appears that they all exist in one phase. The individual components cannot be distinguished. Example, a mixture of salt and water is homogeneous because upon looking at it, it seems like salt and water exist in the liquid state because the salt particles are so small and evenly dispersed in the water that it is invisible.
  • Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures wherein the components are distinguishable. An example of a heterogeneous mixture is sand and water. It is very clear to see the sand particles and the liquid water.

Elements and compounds are examples of pure substances.

  • All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons. Elements cannot be broken down further into simpler substances by simple means.
  • Compounds are chemical combinations of two or more elements. Their properties are different from the properties of the elements that make up the compound. Compounds have a definite composition and cannot be broken down into their component elements by ordinary means.
