Algae, protozoans, and fungi are able to form symbiotic relationships with fungi, termites, and plant roots respectively.

Algae is able to form a mutually beneficial relationship with fungi and form a composite organism known as lichen. The alga is able to photosynthesize and provide the fungus with necessary carbohydrates while the fungus provides protection in return.

Some protozoans species occupy the guts of termites and provide them with the capacity to digest cellulose. In return, the protozoan is able to obtain protection and its food from the gut of the termite.

Fungi are able to form a mutually beneficial relationship with the roots of some higher plants and form a structure known as mycorrhiza.
