The Mauryan Empire was divided into four provinces, with the imperial capital at Pataliputra, near the Ganges River in the modern state of Bihar in India. The Edicts of Ashoka, a collection of inscriptions made during Ashoka’s reign from 268-232 BCE, give the names of the Maurya Empire’s four provincial capitals: Tosali in the east, Ujjain in the west, Suvarnagiri in the south, and Taxila in the north.

the empire expanded by conquests. asoka ruled over most of the indian continent until he stopped; sickened by sufferings from wars. then he maintained peace n issued edicts to govt officials to carve them on rocks in simple terms. the edicts protected religious freedom n tolerance, instructed officials to help the poor and elderly. they also commanded obedience to parents, respect for elders, generosity for all priests. unfortunately those edicts were not accepted by all sectors in the indian population.
