In other words, theme is the life/universal lesson the text holds, as well as the author's message or moral of it. A literary works may have several themes and they are not directly stated in the story, therefore the reader usually has to think it through.
Some examples of themes are "Love fades", "Love wins in the end", " It only takes seconds for fate to change" and " Nature often triumphs over man's quarrels".
