The answer does not depend on the experiment unfortunately. All you need is the data from the tables. The industrial revolution spread soot everywhere which is dark (call it black) in color. This dark floating material was the ash from burning coal.
That given, the background color went from light to dark which would make it much harder for the light color moths to survive. They could easily be picked off by the predators that eat such things, because they (the moths) were light colored against a dark background.
