This gene only influences the production of the enzyme B-galactosidase, and no other features of the individual, and has other mutant alleles (variants of the gene) such as lacZAM15 and lacZ' .
A trait, however, can be determined by more than one genes and this form of inheritance is known as polygenic inheritance. Examples of the traits that are influenced by more than one genes is eye color, skin color and hair color, where each different gene have an additive effect on the phenotype.
