Poetry is subjective. That means that whatever your background experience is, you will interpret poetry in terms of that background, unless you are just asked for the rhyme scheme.

So for example, if you read Because I could not Stop for Death, you will read this a whole differently than someone who is dying slowly and has time to think about what she is saying. In fact, the subject may not interest someone very young at all and that is perfectly natural. We respond to what troubles us or uplifts us the most, and that depends on our background.

A first kiss is a fond memory for all of us and we remember it vividly. But it is a whole lot different for someone in their 40s than it is for someone just going through it.
