Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to his first term as president of the United States in 1932. Because there were no term limits for president, he ran again and won in 1936, 1940, and 1944. He died shortly after beginning his fourth term in 1945. Even though the Constitution had not included term limits, all presidents before Roosevelt followed the precedent set by George Washington and only served two terms.
