the 17th amendment establishes the popular election of United States Senators

Amendment Seventeenth to the Constitution of the United States placed the general election of United States senators by the bodies of the nations. The amendment succeeds the First Article,  1 and 2 Clauses of the U.S. Constitution, following which senators were chosen by legislatures of the states. It also modifies the method for appointing vacancies in the Senate, providing for the legislatures of the state to sanction their administrators to create interim jobs until a particular election can be organised.
