The church of Cluny in France was finished in 1130. From that time until the construction of the St. Peter's Basilica in 1506, the Cluny abbey was the biggest church in Europe for about 500 years. This abbey was 500-foot-long and it was constructed in the Romanesque architectural style. In 1790, the abbey was sacked and almost destroyed.
