Yes fransisco franco was a miliatary dicactor from 1939 until he passed away.

Generalissimo Francisco Franco was definitely a dictator in Spain because:

  • he seized power by force after defeating the Republicans (advocates of democracy) at the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939
  • he never relinquished power until the day of his death, in 1976
  • he ruled advised by a council, but he always had the last word
  • he suppressed the freedom of speech and many other individual rights during his rule
  • he persecuted all dissidents (people opposing his ideas and government style) and had them imprisoned, exiled or executed
