So in order to factor, first we must look for a GCF, but there isn't one, now we find what factors of 42 add to 13

Factors of 42

1+42 =43

2+21 =23

3+14 = 17

6+7 = 13

Now, we just divide the two into seperate parenthesees.

(X+6)(X+7)

The quadratic expressions (of the type  x^2+13x+42 ) can be factored  by using the midterm break formula.

The midterm is factored in such a way that when those numbers are added the mid term is obtained and when multiplied the end term is obtained.

The factors of x^2+13x+42 are (x+7) (x+6)

In this expression  x^2+13x+42 the midterm is factored to 6 and 7.

When 6 is added to 7 it gives 13 and when 6 is multiplied to 7 it gives 42.

Mathematically

x^2+13x+42

= x²+6x+7x+42

= x(x+6) +7(x+6)            taking x and 7 as common

= (x+7) (x+6)

Hence

x^2+13x+42 = (x+7) (x+6)
