Orval Faubus sent troops to resist integration, and President Eisenhower sent troops to enforce it.
Central High School in Arkansas was the center of a desegregation battle following the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education.
Faubus was the governor of Arkansas and had been supportive of liberal ideas up to the mid-1950's. He had appointed African Americans to government positions and had been a supporter of New Deal programs under FDR. However, desegregation upset his voting base and he was concerned about reelection. As a result, Faubus sent in the National Guard to prevent the integration of Central High School. Eisenhower responded with Army troops who escorted students into school amid protest.
