South Carolina was first settled in 1670 by immigrants from Barbados, who arrived in three ships with the authorization from King Charles II to establish a colony in the south part of Chesapeake. Many of those settlers came from Barbados with their slaves, these slaves brought their knowledge of growing rice, but also they were used in the sugar plantations when sugar cane was introduced in 1640 to the colony.
