During the early 1900s, nativist tactics were established as a result of anti-immigrant sentiments due to the rejection towards the settlers who were arriving to the United States. American citizens began to demand the Congress to pass laws restricting immigration as well as limiting the new immigrants the right to vote. Besides, not only anti-Catholic feelings , but also competition for scarce jobs and low wages increased during the wave of newcomers. Immigration restrictionist sentiments were justified since immigrants were blamed for exceeded tax revenue, refusal to learn the local language. unemployment or depressing wages, absence of a sense of community and nationality, heavy use of social welfare systems and overpopulation of poor zones among others.
