While entertaining an emissary who came to negotiate the Duke's marriage with the daughter of a powerful family, the Duke tells about his last wife. He shows the portrait of the Last Duchess and begins to tell about her. When the Duke narrated the story it becomes clear to the readers that the reason for the early demise of his wife was the Duke himself. He didn't appreciate his wife's smiling gratitude towards other men which turned him arrogant towards her.
