The american electorate began seriously to question the competence of the bush administration as a result of mismanagement of the government's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane  Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005 with sustained winds of 125 mph. It damaged an estimated $100 B in properties and approximately 1000 people lost their lives.

Hurricane Katrina badly blemished George W. Bush's reputation. His administration failed to timely and efficiently deal with the calamity.
