Primary succession would be starting from nothing, like an exposed rock surface. It's a very long process to make a barren surface livable like a forest.

Secondary succession would be recovery after destruction of an established place. Like, a forest that has been completely burned to ash and has to regrow. This also takes awhile to happen, but not as long as primary succession.
